The official website for the Fairy Tail anime revealed today that the final season of the series will include a new backstory about the character Acnologia that wasn’t in the original manga. There are only four episodes of the series left, so this new backstory should be shown quite soon.
A new key visual was revealed alongside this announcement, the final ever key visual that will be released for the anime. The new backstory will apparently be set forty years earlier.
A new piece of character art was also released, showcasing a much younger, less ragged-looking Acnologia.
I’m certainly intrigued, and looking forward to finding out more about this character who has remained shrouded in mystery for much of the series. It does make wonder as to why this wasn’t included in the manga, and I can’t help but think back to what happened with Naruto, as Shounen Jump told Masashi Kishimoto when the manga had to end, and he was forced to cut content – which he then passed notes about to the anime staff and it was shown in the Naruto Shippuden anime. Fairy Tail is still technically continuing with the 100 Years Quest manga, so it’s possible that in this situation Mashima made the choice not to include it, eager to start work on his Edens Zero manga. But that’s just speculation – regardless, I’m happy that it’s being shown now.
So, what do you think about this rather surprise announcement? Are you interested to see more of Acnologia’s past? What do you think it will hold? Let us know in the comments.
Fairy Tail: Final Series will finish airing on September 19th. It is available to stream on Crunchyroll with subtitles, and on Funimation in both dubbed and subtitled formats.
